The article Poor town hires luxury car for mayor (DD, August 23) has reference.
The purchase of an R800 000 car for the mayor when the Mhlontlo Municipality is unable to afford such extravagance defies belief.
This wasted money could be used to create opportunity and lift Mhlontlo residents out of poverty.
Imagine how many jobs could be created, houses built, clinics constructed or schools created to better the lives of these folk with this money?
The mayor’s excuse that the car was procured from a resolution during the last council before he was mayor is weak and a cop out.
A council resolution can be rescinded. Why is the mayor and the new council not doing this?
To spend in excess of R50 000 per month on car hire while the repaired mayoral car is ready and waiting at a garage for collection is fruitless and wasteful expenditure.
I have written to the MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Mlibo Qoboshiyane to ask him to intervene and take action in this matter.
As soon as I receive an answer I shall report back to your newspaper with the response from the MEC.
