DA TO PICKET AGAINST AMATHOLE DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY WATER TARIFF INCREASE

The Democratic Alliance Amathole constituency will be picketing against exorbitant water tariffs to be imposed by the Amathole District Municipality (ADM).

The picket will take place from 12h30-14h00 on Friday, 22 June 2012 outside the ADM offices, corner Caxton- and Oxford Street, East London.

DA Amathole Constituency Leader Dacre Haddon, MPL, and Constituency Chairperson, Councillor William Ward, will present a petition to the Municipal Manager of Amathole District Municipality, Chris Magwangqana, at 13h00 on Friday.

The provision of water for all is enshrined in Section 27 of The Bill of Rights in our Constitution.

The current ADM proposed water tariffs in excess of 120% in some cases will have a bottom line effect on business and already financially weary domestic consumers. It will further exacerbate job losses as businesses try to absorb these costs.

Furthermore, there is a worry that the proposed hikes will curtail on-going supply of water to indigent and poor communities. We cannot let the vulnerable in our society go without water because of unaffordability in supplying this service due to these hefty planned increases.

Section 74(2) (a) of the Systems Act: Tariff Policy states that users of municipal services should be treated equitably in the application of tariffs.

The DA believes that this is not the case at present.
