COMMISSION TO PROBE POOR UITENHAGE SANITATION

WITH reference to the article, “Even bucket system beats this squalor” (The Herald, May 20), I advise the community of Uitenhage and readers at large that the issue regarding poor sanitation in Uitenhage has been brought to the attention of the South African Human Rights Commission.

On behalf of the DA I wrote to the commission in January seeking an investigation into certain areas within the province (including the Uitenhage areas of Mooi Valley, Kriekie Valley and Mohashi Village) where there were dire problems regarding sanitation.

A few weeks ago I followed up with the commission and was told an investigation was underway.

As these processes can take time, I wish to assure these residents and the community of Nelson Mandela Metro Municipality that I will be following up on this issue regularly.

As soon as there is feedback regarding the investigation from the commission, I will report back to you with the recommendations and planned way forward.
