Poor condition of Aliwal North airstrip hinders efforts to save newborn twin

It is with profound shock and regret that the DA learned of the death of a newborn twin baby this morning because the poor condition of the municipal airstrip in Aliwal North hindered efforts to get it emergency medical care. The life of this baby may have been saved if he had received the necessary care on time.

The neglect and failure to maintain infrastructure by municipalities in the Eastern Cape is visible throughout the province and is costing lives. Under President Jacob Zuma’s ANC we are not longer making progress towards a better life.

Holes and tall grass on the landing strip due to a lack of maintenance and grading by the Maletswai Municipality made it too dangerous for an Aerocare flying ambulance to land at Aliwal North to transport the babies to Bloemfontein by air.

On behalf of the DA in the Eastern Cape and in conjunction with constituency MP Annette Steyn, we will be raising this issue in the provincial legislature and in parliament. The Malatswai Municipal Manager must be held account for the lack of maintenance of this airstrip.

Working infrastructure is a key to investment in this province. The DA will continue to lead the fight against the neglect in our municipalities.
