Budget vote speeches: Departments of Safety and Liaison and of Roads and Public Works

The following speeches were delivered in the Eastern Cape Legislature today by the DA’s Shadow MEC for Safety and Security, Bobby Stevenson MPL and Shadow MEC for Roads and Public Works, Vicky Knoetze MPL, during the budget vote debates of provincial departments.

DA Shadow MEC for Safety and Security

“Dereliction of duty not to oversight flying squads in 10111 Centres”

  • Flying squads in our two metros frequently have vehicle shortages including nil in East London.
  • The department is still not doing oversight of 10111 centres.
  • The R220 million call centre building in Port Elizabeth is standing empty and the R920 million Tetra System has been kept in storage since the Soccer World Cup.
  • The DA believes in a separate rural safety division of the SAPS along with rapid reaction units that can be deployed to hotspot areas.

“Delivery and maintenance of transport infrastructure that is sustainable”

  • The pair and maintenance of the road network servicing the citrus industry must be a top priority. to as a negative impact on the citrus industry will have a direct and negative effect on employment in this industry and in the Eastern Cape.
  • The Provincial Department of Public Works still has an obligation to ensure that the National Departments fulfil their obligations in terms of buildings under their authority in the Eastern Cape.
