Need for deep probe into Alfred Nzo’s R10.9m settlement

THE article “Alfred Nzo municipality loses R10.9-million court order appeal” (Daily Dispatch, June 5) raises an issue of concern. The mayor Eunice Diko says she did not know about the out-of-court settlement made after a contract with Kwebi Creative CC had to supply ductile pipes for water in October 2013 was terminated.

If it is true that the company did not submit value-added tax information and annual financial statements, it is highly concerning that contracts were signed before the municipality ensured that all documents were in order and legitimate.

Millions in taxpayers’ money has been wasted in this process. This is unacceptable. The DA calls on the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Fikile Xasa, to conduct a thorough investigation to find out who is responsible for this wasteful expenditure.

Whoever is implicated must be brought to book and prosecuted, irrespective of his/her political affiliation.

It would appear that the mayor is not running things in this municipality and that other senior politicians are making final decisions without her consent. We want to know who these people are and what their agenda is?

How long will the authorities continue to waste hard-earned taxpayers’ money, while the majority of people live below the poverty line? — Nokonwaba Matikinca, MPL, DA Shadow MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Bhisho
