The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape is appealing to Education MEC Mandla Makupula to finally put a building plan in place to assist ET Thabane Primary School learners and the Ugie community as the school building is decrepit.
The state of the school building is not conducive for teaching and learning. It is also a health hazard for learners and teachers.
I have urged MEC Mandla Makupula on numerous occasions to intervene at ET Thabane Primary School; letters sent to the MEC and parliamentary questions have fallen on deaf ears. The MEC has failed to honour my requests. I conducted oversight visits to the school in 2013, 2017 and earlier this month and found that the situation has not changed (please click here to view a letter sent to the MEC).
The school is the only primary school in Ugie and it has a dedicated principal as well as committed teachers and parents. The Department of Education and the MEC for Education in the province have failed these learners, their parents, and teachers by ignoring my requests for a new school building.
MEC Makupula’s behaviour towards the community of Ugie is scandalous and unacceptable.
This is just another example of how an uncaring government is abandoning the most vulnerable in our society. The Department must provide total change for the learners of ET Thabane Primary School. — Edmund van Vuuren MPL, Shadow MEC for Education.
