Dear Editor
The documentary by M-Net’s Carte Blanche last Sunday about the problems at the Dora Nginza Hospital is symptomatic of the many ills plaguing the Eastern Cape Health Department.
Our health system is failing thousands of people every day. Examples can be found every day, everywhere and intervention at the highest level is what is needed.
It is commendable that the Department of Health is one of only a handful that has an internal – or so-called in-house auditing unit. Members of this unit are active and efficient in their work and recommendations. However, while this unit continues to make positive recommendations to solve problems in management and financial systems within the department, the management seldom responds.
A meeting between the Portfolio Committee on Health and the Department is scheduled to be held within the two weeks. I encourage the public to submit their questions and concerns to me as a member of the committee (pienaar@damedia.co.za or fax 040 636 4547). In so doing, we shall call the Department and the MEC for Health to task about its functions and responsibility to the citizens of the Eastern Cape.
