The ongoing incidents of tyre-burning and lawlessness by residents in Rocklands are as a result of the insufficiency and ineptness of officials of the Nelson Mandela Metro and of the provincial department of housing. It is hardly surprising that the anger of disenfranchised residents have spilt into the streets.

The housing delays in Ward 45 have been an ongoing problem, which seems to be ignored by the ANC-led municipality.

The Democratic Alliance has been attempting to contact Mr. Seth Maqetuka, executive director for housing in the Metro and Mr. Mvuleni Mapu, director for housing in the Metro since yesterday, (subs: Monday, 17 Aug) to no avail. Attempts today (subs: Tues, 18 Aug) to contact the MEC for Housing, Mrs. Nombulelo Mabandla, were also fruitless. It is unacceptable that top officials, who made a pledge to serve the people, are fiddling while Rome is burning.

The Democratic Alliance calls upon the MEC to stop ignoring the calls of the people of Rocklands. I will bring the plight of Ward 45 to the attention of the Bhisho Legislature tomorrow, (subs: Wed, 19 Aug) when the Portfolio Committee for Housing will meet with the department.
