The Democratic Alliance has learned with sadness of the passing of Uitenhage Hospital Senior Superintendent Dr. Tommy Ruiters on Saturday (subs: Sat: 19 Sept).
It had been reported in the media earlier this month that Dr. Ruiters had contracted the H1N1 virus.
On a personal level, I will remember Dr. Ruiters with great fondness as a professional who remained dedicated and committed to the Uitenhage community. His efforts in ensuring that the Uitenhage Hospital received a much needed facelift will remain part of his legacy. He will be sorely missed.
Our condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues.
The passing of Dr. Ruiters is a reminder of the continued threat of swineflu. As at 14 September a total of 11 253 patients in South Africa had been diagnosed with the H1N1 virus. Up to that date there had been 47 fatalities in the country, six being in the Eastern Cape.
