The blocking of highways in the Nelson Mandela Metro by municipal traffic officers this morning is unacceptable. This is a serious indictment on the Metro municipality. A promise to sort out the grievances of traffic officers that is still not being done has led to the chaos caused by them this morning. Over the weekend they refused to do duty at two major sporting events in the city.
The action of these municipal officers puts the good name our province in a bad light and I will be engaging with the MEC of Transport, Ghishma Barry and the Executive Director of Traffic Services to ensure that these grievances are addressed. We don’t wish to have an embarrassing repeat during the Soccer World Cup. The Metro should publically apologise to Port Elizabeth motorists for the disgraceful behaviour by the municipal traffic officers.
It is unacceptable that officers that are supposed to be upholding the motoring law should be holding Port Elizabeth to ransom. The taking of the law into one’s own hands cannot be condoned.
