TAKING UP THE CAUSE OF CASH-STRAPPED MUNICIPALITIES

DA provincial spokesperson on local government, Dacre Haddon.

Late payments by national and provincial government departments to municipalities for services rendered will be in the spotlight at the next sitting of the Bhisho Legislature.

Local government portfolio committee member Dacre Haddon has tabled a motion about the issue and it will be debated in the House on Tuesday, 23 March.

Haddon is calling for a resolution by the house that all outstanding monies by paid by the end of the financial year on 31 March 2010.

“When the province withholds money due to municipalities, it has an extremely adverse effect on their financial viability.  This sometimes results in cash strapped municipalities having to divert other resources to cover the shortfall caused by the province.

“For small municipalities amounts such as these are extremely important and without it they cannot function effectively. In the end, it is the people on the ground, who need service delivery, that are badly affected,” he said.
