WARDS WHERE CRIES FOR DEAD BABIES FILL THE AIR

The sound was torture for Nonkanyiso Mvane, who lay shivering in one of the wards of the Mthatha hospital where scores of newborn babies have died since the beginning of the year – partly due to a lack of life-saving equipment and staff.

The DA’s provincial spokesman on health, Pine Pienaar, described the rate of deaths at the hospital as “disastrous”. He called for an intervention by the national government “just to get out of this mess”.  Read the full story in the Sunday Times.
