The Democratic Alliance welcomes the support from the Bhisho Legislature for more focussed efforts to curbs the slaughter of innocent travellers who does not have the luxury of their own transport. There is an ongoing trend of fatal bus accidents with busses travelling in and from the province.
In the latest incident, on 5 May 2010, 28 passengers died and several others were seriously injured in a bus accident near De Doors in the Western Cape. The bus in question was allegedly from a company in the Eastern Cape.
The motion agreed to:
a) Safety checks be intensified by the Province on all busses entering and exiting the province;
b) That these checks on busses be done on identified road routes leading into and out of the province as close to provincial border as possible as well as defined routes within the province;
c) The MEC for Transport engage with the Passenger Rail Association of South Africa (PRASA) to expand rail commuter choice and safety as an alternative to bus transport;
d) The results of the bus checks and engagement with PRASA be presented to the portolio committee on Transport on a quarterly basis;
e) Report back on a quarterly basis on safety checks to be presented to the portfolio committee on Transport.
The DA welcomes the co-operation between parties in the Legislature and the genuine atempts to ensure that the safety of the citizens of the province remian a priority.
