THE article Shocking mid-year exam results in EC (DD, July 6) refers. We need to bring back competent school inspectors and subject advisors to the classrooms. The unacceptable outcomes obtained in the national mid-year exams by the Eastern Cape Grade 3, 6 and 9 pupils is an indictment of the ineptitude of the provincial Department of Education, writes Edmund van Vuuren.
These results can be ascribed to poor adherence by the teachers to the set outcomes to be achieved, as well as to the lack of assistance by departmental officials in terms of management, supply of pupil- teacher support material and overcrowding of classes.
