MPL Pine Pienaar received the gratifying news recently that not a single drowning has taken place in the notorious irrigation canal at Kirkwood since he campaigned for a fence to be erected some two years ago.
Before a proper fence was erected, the canal was the scene for many a tragedy, especially in summer, when children took to the deceptionally calm waters for a swim.
“We eventually secured R70 000 from the National Department of Water Affairs to have proper fencing erected. It goes to show that sometimes a little gesture can have an amazing impact on people’s lives,” he said.
