BAYWORLD: MORE BROKEN PROMISES

As was recently reported, Bayworld in Port Elizabeth is very quickly running out of money. Inaction from the MEC has proven that she has had no intention to keep to the promises made by herself or her department.

It has consistently been reported in the media of the plight that the Bayworld facility has had in the past few years. After consistent pressure from myself in the Legislature and the community at large, MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Xoliswa Tom offered her full support and that of her department in helping PE’s premier tourist attraction be restored or upgraded to the international quality facility that the province consistent claims it to be.

The department has endeavoured to source the odd R500 million needed to perform the required maintenance and upgrade the facility, but to date, there is no proof of any attempt in doing so.

I have submitted Parliamentary Questions to the MEC to ask exactly what she is intending to do to rectify the problems facing Bayworld, what her department has done in sourcing the R500 million promised, and to gauge whether she really intends to help out Bayworld or if she is just taking the taxpayers for a “dolphin ride” and paying us lip service.

Yours faithfully

John Cupido, MPL. DA provincial spokesperson for Sport, Recreation, Art and Culture
