NEW MEC IN DARK OVER EDUCATION CHALLENGES

Mandla Makupula, the man tasked with running the beleaguered provincial Education Department, admitted after his swearing-in that he knew nothing about the challenges facing the department.

Makapula’s appointment has been met with both scepticism and cautious optimism by opposition parties. DA MPL Bobby Stevenson said Makapula was a “surprise choice … (and) will be the fourth MEC in six years”.

Fellow DA MPL Edmund van Vuuren, a spokesman on education, said: “Given Makupula’s lack of background in the education system, the DA hopes he will, unlike his predecessors, consult with those in the trenches of education before making important decisions.”  Read the full story in The Herald.
