The Democratic Alliance notes and thanks the chairperson of the Health Portfolio Committee, Mxolisi Dimaza MPL, on agreeing to our request for the committee to make oversight visits on the various state morgues in the Eastern Cape.

This follows the shock-exposé by the Daily Dispatch newspaper of the about the conditions at state morgues in the province.

The DA yesterday called on the Portfolio Committee on Health as a matter of urgency to conduct oversight visits across the province and to report their findings and recommendations directly to the provincial legislature.

The job of a portfolio committee is to exercise stringent oversight on state run facilities and if need be make firm recommendations to the Legislature at a sitting of the House where substantive resolutions are made and put into effect.

This is indeed the first step towards correcting the human rights injustices that have been uncovered recently and to restoring human dignity.
