The Democratic Alliance is committed to reconciliation and redress This means rectifying the wrongs of the past and having an inclusive approach to the culture and heritage of all people.

The Eastern Cape Geographical Names Committee will soon be embarking on public hearings across the province. It is very important that we all participate in these hearings to ensure that this is a widely consultative process.

I agree that the name change process is a legal one and the prescripts must be followed. Yes, the offensive and incorrect names should be rectified, but let us use our scare resources to address with the needs of our community.

Changing names is not one of the priorities for service delivery in the Eastern Cape and will not assist in job creation, building of houses crime and other needs of our community.

Please attend the public hearings and assist me to carry the message to the committee that the first name that should change is that of unemployment, to employment.

Yours sincerely

Pine Pienaar
