It is unacceptable that after 18 years of democracy there are still women who go to the river to fetch water in an area invested with snakes, go to the bushes to collect wood to cook for their families, that children are always complaining about stomach aches and have bloody stools because of dirty water.

Fed-up residents of three rural communities in Mqanduli in the King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality (KSD) have approached the DA for help because they still have no water or electricity. The citizens of Ward 21, 22 and 23 continue to suffer hardship despite personal involvement by the Speaker of the Legislature, Fikile Xasa, who, as a member of the ANC’s National Executive, made promises to the community when they threatened not to vote for the ANC in last year’s municipal elections.

The Speaker visited the area shortly before the election to convince the angry community to vote for his preferred ANC-candidate, Xolile Matiti, as the ward councillor.

Cadre deployment does not produce service delivery.

I visited wards 21, 22 and 23 in Mqanduli yesterday (subs: Wednesday, 4 July). These wards have been forgotten by the ANC. I was shocked at the lack of basic services, being so close to Elliotdale town.

The DA believes that service delivery is a cornerstone of good governance. It is for this reason that I pIan to have a meeting with the newly elected Municipal Manager of KSD, Zama Mnqanqeni, to discuss the plight of these communities and expedite the delivery of these basic services.

Water is supposed to be distributed to these wards by the municipality together with paraffin but instead the ANC is playing politics with these services. For instance, when there is a funeral the community is told that there is no truck to deliver water but when it is the funeral of a close ANC-family member or a branch structure member the truck is available. When it comes to paraffin it is alleged that only individuals who are signed-up members of the ANC benefit from this service.

The situation in these wards is shocking. Where is the human dignity that the ANC is always making noise about in the DA led municipalities?
