The articles “SACP: Bhisho paralysed” (Daily Dispatch, September 11) and “Choose, civil servants told” (Daily Dispatch, August 31) has reference.
The Democratic Alliance welcomes the support of the SACP and Cosatu for our position that civil servants should not be allowed to trade with the province. Over two years ago I tabled a Private Members’ Bill in the Provincial Legislature on this matter and have since then been lobbying for this practice to stop. Nearly R100 million of municipal- and almost R1 billion of provincial tenders went to civil servants in the last financial year.
This clearly results in a major conflict of interest. There is speculation that syndicates are once again operating in certain government departments. What is required is strong leadership on this matter so this practise can be outlawed. The national government should introduce legislation in this regard.
It is time for the President to give leadership on this matter so corruption can be eradicated amongst civil servants.
