The DA, led by Kariega Constituency Leader and MPL, Dacre Haddon, held an anti-rape and violence campaign in the Nxuba Municipality recently. This followed complaints from the community that rapes of both female and male victims were on the increase.
When approached to assist, DA activists and councillors immediately took action.
Information tables were held where advice was shared with the public on how to prevent rape and what to do if you where the victim of rape or sexual abuse. This included who to contact and what treatment to demand.
DA activists, councillors Cecilia Auld and Ernie Lombard, and MPL Dacre Haddon practically assisted by clearing some bush along a pathway to remove potential lurking spots for perpetrators.
Residents also had the opportunity to sign a petition to highlight the problem to the police and to ask assistance. More than 250 people voiced their concern. The petition was handed to local police chief, Captain Msokoli Shumani, who highlighted inadequate lights and the abuse of alcohol as contributing factors.
The councillors undertook to raise the problem of inadequate lights in the next municipal meeting and to see if they can have some influence in getting high mast-lights installed.
The DA is also making efforts to ensure that municipal by-laws on drinking, especially in public, are enforced.
