EXPANDED BORDERS CAUSED PROBLEMS IN BAVIAANS

The article ‘Policitians throw mud over dismal municipal audits’ (15 August) refers:

Every citizen in this province, from the two Metros to the most far-flung municipalities know that local government is in a state of chaos.

Baviaans is not the worst run municipality in the province. In fact, it continues to win Local Government Vuna-awards for having the cleanest towns. Steytlerville was recently named the Eastern Cape winner for the “Town of the year” competition with Kwela and Kyknet. The problems in the DA-led Baviaans Municipality were caused by a budget shortfall. The incorporation of Rietbron and other hamlets of the ECDMA region by the Demarcation Board without the necessary budget to service this area placed enormous constraints on the municipal budget.

In this regard the DA held meetings with the MEC for Local Government for departmental assistance to address this unfunded mandate.

The people of South Africa deserve efficient and clean government and the DA-led Western Cape government has proven that change is possible.

The DA-led City of Cape Town and Midvaal municipalities this year received their eighth and ninth successive unqualified audits. Auditor-General Terence Nombembe attributed this to leadership commitment.

In order for us to provide this clean governance to all South Africans we need to win elections. The DA could then provide its quality service delivery beyond the Western Cape.
