THE rugby stadium stabbing incident is a total disgrace!
The Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture must review the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act of 2010, which recognises that the physical well-being of everyone at stadiums must be protected and promoted. This act also notes that the controlling bodies of sports activities and event organisers must have proper security and safety measures in place.
Security must be tightened up at all sports venues, security guards must be properly trained and conduct accurate searches of all spectators entering a stadium. It baffles me that the perpetrator was able to enter the stadium with a knife and this was never detected!
This incident affects all sports fans around the Eastern Cape because it serves as an indication of the risk that they take when they decide to watch a game outside the comfort of their homes. Sports, recreation, arts and culture MEC Pemmy Majodina must look into this issue as a matter of urgency and ensure that all security companies employed for such events are equipped with employees who are properly trained for the job.
