The DA in the Eastern Cape has requested that the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Fikile Xasa, conduct an urgent investigation into findings by the Auditor-General relating to irregular awarding of tenders to councillors and officials in the Sarah Baartman District Municipality (SBDM).
The public denials in the media today by Sarah Baartman ANC regional secretary, Scara Njadayi, that party members did not walk out of a Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) meeting on Tuesday is an effort to steer the focus away from the AG’s findings and the ANC’s involvement in tender irregularities.
The fact remains that the management report that was originally circulated for the meeting appears to have been incomplete in order to hide some of the AG’s findings from the MPAC meeting.
I have asked MEC Xasa for an urgent and comprehensive investigation into the findings of the AG-report for the SBDM and that the necessary steps be taken against all persons implicated in these tender irregularities. Secondly, the perceived attempts by the governing party to hide the facts must be addressed.
