Pupil assaulted by teacher
On 13 June 2018, a 6 year old boy was allegedly beaten by his teacher at Island View Farm School on Grootvlei Farm in the Alexandria district. A case was opened and the child was hospitalised in Port Alfred.
The Democratic Alliance strongly condemns the alleged behaviour portrayed by this teacher. No child, under any circumstance should be subjected to any form of abuse.
In a recent response received from the Eastern Cape Department of Education MEC, Mandla Makaphula, it is revealed that 18 cases of physical and sexual abuse of learners by teachers were reported to the Department between 2015 and this year.
Of the 18 cases received, eight teachers were found guilty and two of these teachers were dismissed for assault and corporal punishment. Of the remaining 10 caes, four teachers resigned and six cases are still not finalised.
Shockingly, over 60% of these cases took place at primary schools.

Parents trust that their children will be safe when attending school. The ANC-led government has broken this trust.
In the case of the 6 year old learner, I contacted the District Director, Mr Nicky de Bruin, to bring this disastrous case to the attention of the Department. I was told that the matter will receive urgent attention and investigation.
A DA-led government will ensure, as one of its top priorities that children and parents have peace of mind during school hours and that learners are safe and the environment is conducive to learning.
I call on the MEC to enforce strict consequences for teachers who are found guilty of any form of abuse of learners and to ensure that these culprits are brought speedily to book. — Edmund van Vuuren MPL, Shadow MEC for Education.
