The South African Police Service must pull out all the stops to rearrest the individuals who managed to escape from the police holding cells in Elliot last night.
The Democratic Alliance has reliably learnt that seven detainees, who were allegedly being held on charges ranging from house robbery to attempted murder, managed to escape the holding cells and take a police officer’s firearm in the process.
One cannot allow these dangerous individuals to be on the run in the community, particularly considering the crimes they are alleged to have committed.
There needs to be a thorough investigation into the circumstances around how they managed to escape and steal a police firearm. We cannot allow lawlessness to run rife in our communities and firm steps need to be taken to ensure that these individuals are back behind bars.
The DA wants to see a safe province, where communities can go about their daily lives without fear of the criminal element. Law and order need to be restored in our province.
