ADM task team appointment good first step, but more needs to be done

The Democratic Alliance welcomes the announcement of the appointment of a multi-disciplinary task team for the Amathole District Municipality, whose task will be to strengthen and implement a sustainable financial recovery plan for the Municipality.

This is exactly what the DA proposed to the MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Xolile Nqatha, in a letter dealing with this issue, last week.

While this is a positive first step, it must be remembered that ADM is just one of several local municipalities in the Eastern Cape that are on the verge of total collapse.

We will monitor the progress of this task team very closely and ensure that the tough decisions are made. Ongoing SAA-type bailouts are not a sustainable solution.

It is vital that similar interventions be rolled out to other distressed municipalities across the province, if we are to prevent the total collapse of local government.

The DA will continue to put forward constructive proposals, to save the province and build a capable state.
