The huge increase in the number of SAPS members murdered, revealed recently in the latest quarterly crime statistics, must be condemned in the strongest terms.
According to the latest figures, in the Eastern Cape, seven SAPS members were murdered between January and March 2021, compared to the one SAPS member murdered in the same period in 2020.
During this period a total of 24 police officials were murdered in the country with eight in KZN, four in the Western Cape, two in Gauteng, one each in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape, and none in the Free State and the North West province.
The Eastern Cape had an increase of six compared to KZN which had an increase of four, and the Western Cape which had an increase of three.
Those involved in the murder of our SAPS members must be hunted down with the full might of the law. The full power of the law needs to be extended so an example can be made of those who engage in these shameful acts.
SAPS members are our frontline against the criminal element, and this latest increase is very worrying.
The DA extends condolences to the family members of these brave SAPS members who put their lives on the line for a safer province.
