DA applauds EMS service after horror taxi and train collision

The Democratic Alliance (DA) wishes to acknowledge the excellent work done by the provincial Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team in responding so effectively to the horror accident in Addo yesterday, in which a taxi transporting scholars collided with a goods train.

The EMS team, together with the South African Police Services (SAPS), the provincial Traffic Department, Addo’s Fire and Emergency Unit and private ambulance services, responded with speed and discipline to ensure that all victims of the horror accident received the best possible care.

Unfortunately, the driver of the minibus taxi succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The provincial Aeromedical Services helicopter airlifted a critically injured patient to Livingstone Hospital, who sadly later succumbed to his injuries.

The DA extends our sincere condolences to their families and loved ones during this very difficult time.

Another seriously injured patient was transferred to Livingstone Hospital by ambulance. Other patients were transferred to Uitenhage Provincial Hospital and the Sundays River Valley Hospital for treatment.

Despite multiple challenges facing the provincial EMS services, including a severe shortage of ambulances and emergency personnel, it is indeed heart-warming to note their passion and dedication, which undoubtedly saved lives in the aftermath of the horror crash.

We extend our deep appreciation to them and all other stakeholders who contributed to assisting the crash victims in their time of need.
