Tower Hospital Cell   Three of the seven state mental health facilities in the Eastern Cape do not have permanent psychiatrists. May 19th, 2018

Honourable Premier, Madam Speaker, MECs, Colleagues and Distinguished Guests. I addressed rights issues in this chamber on Tuesday and will do so again today. Since the beginning of this term of office, the Eastern Cape Department of Health has spent much of its time on the defensive to the detriment of its patients and its mandate to serve our people’s health needs. I will, therefore, describe just how this inability …

The DA is deeply disturbed and concerned about the well-choreographed show that was presented to a DA delegation that visited the Tower Psychiatric Hospital in Fort Beaufort on Monday 12 March 2018. It became clear to us that the hospital was cleaned up and prepared for the visit. We agree with the article published in Rapport on Sunday, 11 March, in which it was reported how workers were made to …

February 26th, 2018

There are more than 7 000 vacancies in the Department of Health of which almost 3 000 of are for the much-needed nursing personnel. The DA welcomes the R300-million set aside to fill 1 800 vacancies within the department, as reported in the media last week.  However, we remain concerned by the high number of vacant clinical and non-clinical posts. Staff shortages in hospitals and clinics will continue to cripple our …

February 13th, 2018

The overgrown grounds of the Zanempilo Clinic in Mzamomhle in Gonubie are so appalling that members of the Democratic Alliance assisted staff and patients by cutting the shoulder- high, overgrown grass recently. Clinics are the lifeblood of our state healthcare services and the first point of call for those whose health depends entirely on the services provided by the Eastern Cape Department of Health. I am shocked by the overcrowding …

EMS staff risk life and limb

January 10th, 2018

The DA is horrified to learn that a female ambulance driver was injured on duty by a brick thrown at her by two men at 02:30 on Friday, 15 December 2017 (reference – Weekend Post: 16 December 2017). Our EMS staff risk life and limb to provide speedy lifesaving services and emergency care and, in so doing, jeopardise their personal safety and wellbeing.
